Fridays are my days to stay true to who I am and bring my best self forward. At 48, it’s more important than ever for us to be our brave selves.
I often use Friday as a day to be my effervescent best style wise. Bit more color in my wardrobe, bit more casual attitude. I take it up a notch with a great earring and of course, power pumps.
It’s also the day I strive to be my most extroverted. I try to schedule at least one outing and meet new people. So if I suddenly walk up to you and introduce myself, don’t write me off as crazy. I just want to be true to who I am. I love making new connections.
When I was in my teens in the 1980s, I was a Punk Rocker. I was a mix of Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Joan Jett and focused on being as outlandish as possible. Normal folk didn’t understand my inspiration but it was actually a reaction to my extreme shyness. The stares I got were actually flattering.
My favorite stores were Trash and Vaudeville and FLIP. I remember buying a used men’s wool overcoat in FLIP and the most awesome combat boots. I felt fantastic. I had found the inspiration in the Punk Rock lifestyle to be bold and unafraid. I went to CBGBs and Irving Plaza. Danced the nights away and just enjoyed being me.
I use Friday’s to recreate that feeling. It’s a perfect day to show up, be seen and recreate my wild side. I even throw on some extra accessories for the ride.
